More photos :)

Mainly a picture post today! I brought my slr camera to cheetah time and got some nice shots of Nala and Jasmine.  We then got Shaka out of his enclosure for a while - he is leash trained and they are trying to get him used to coming out and walking around and being stroked. He is going to be part of the public tours. He is a gorgeous cat, only just over a year and you can see how much younger he is. Very playful too! Watch out or he will grab your shoes!

  1. Hi Miss Lennon
Hope you are enjoying your trip! It looks really exciting. Hopefully the rain stops soon. From reading your blog, I now know that there are 2 types of cheetahs.
We would like to know how you feed the cheetahs. Do you just put the food down or do you do it a special way?
Look forward to hearing more soon.

    1. Hi guys, I think I must have been a bit confusing in something I wrote! There is actually only one type of cheetah. The other cats here are two servals, a small African wild cat, and one caracal - another type of cat classed as vermin in South Africa. Having said that, there is a subspecies called the asiatic cheetah that is extraordinarily rare but they have just recently found a small colony living in Iran. Also there is something called a king cheetah which has dark stripes on their back. This, however, is just a different colouring not a different type as such. A little bit like a white lion or tiger.
Anyway, feeding the cheetahs. We put their meat in big dog bowls and essentially yes we just put it down. However it varies a little between the cats. Nala and Jasmine are easy, whereas Tessa and Shakira get a bit grumpy and hiss at you to go away as soon as you've put it down! Penny and Trigger are a little challenging to feed because they are in the same enclosure and usually fight over the food a bit. At the end of the day though, if you have food in your hand they are far more interested in that than you!!

By what I have read your enjoying your time.
    Awesome pictures there so cute.
we would like to know: how much pounds of meat do the cheetah and how many litres of water do they drink?
Hope you have a wonderful time.

    1. Glad you guys are enjoying the pictures! The cheetahs are definitely extremely cute! We feed the cheetahs approximately 2kgs of meat each a day. Shakira gets 2.5 and Trigger gets 2.3, and at the moment Jasmine is also getting a little more because she is pregnant. The others get exactly 2kgs. They eat every day except Sunday when they have a big bone instead. As for water, I'm not too sure of exact amounts. We replace their buckets with fresh water every morning and usually they're still mostly full so they probably don't even drink 1 litre. However they also get moisture that they need from the meat. Good question!

    1. Hi Levi,
In the wild cheetahs will often eat impala and springbok, so a horse is about as close as we can get. They will also sometimes eat small prey like rabbits or some birds, especially when they have cubs to feed. Here at the centre apparently they do occasionally feed them a whole chicken so they can get the goodness from eating all the bones and insides as well as the meat. Jade will sometimes get a special treat and have a chick like we feed to the servals :)
